Idea & Inspiration
The process of selecting a cake should start as early as
6 months ahead after your engagement.
Get recommendation from family and friends, research, visit the wedding
cake website, read the cake wedding magazine to get inspiration and participate
discussion on the bridal forum to get advices. Draw and collect few cake photos
of your favorite before meeting your baker or a cake designer, decides on your
wedding theme (i.e.; Japanese, oriental red, Mexican, Alice in the wonderland),
color (i.e.; pink, mint and peach, yellow), style (i.e.; elegant, whimsical , chic)
shape (i.e.; round, square) flavor (i.e.; orange, coffee, vanilla, mix fruits
with hazel nuts) & indoor or outdoor (i.e.; the weather).
Budget
Once you've got some idea of the type of cake you'd like,
you'll need to work out how much money you have to spend on the cake. Be
realistic and compare the prices of various cake vendors. When it gets down to
the time of choosing the baker, you can ask for quotes and then compare these
and ask for discounts where appropriate. However, when deciding on the cake and
budget, please consider these factors; bear in mind that, a designer cake is usually
cost RM1, 000 and above.
1.
No. of tiers
2.
Fondant or butter cream
3.
No. of guest

4.

5.
Design complication & detailing
6.
Delivery & set up fee
Cake Tasting
Request for cake tasting because flavors like chocolate,
strawberry, vanilla will vary depending on the cake is made of. A good bakery
can make vanilla taste amazing. Exotic flavor sometimes alienate guests who
don’t recognize the flavor. If you'd like the cake to be decorated with fresh
flowers or lace décor, your baker can
collaborate with your florist & decorator.
Cake Design
The more elaborate the design, means more expensive as
more time are spent on creating it. The cake design should match the aesthetic
of the day . Ron Ben-Israel, a wedding-cake designer in New York City, says
inspiration can come from these four places: location, fashion, nature, or the
menu. With location, not only can the reception site provide ideas, but so can
the city and its architecture. A cake for a San Francisco wedding, for
instance, may borrow the pastel hues of the city's Victorian row houses. The
details of a bride's dress or accessories, such as the lace in her veil or the
pearls in her necklace, are wonderful to re-create on a cake; perhaps the bows
on her dress can be echoed around the tiers. Adding elements from nature is
always beautiful; look to the centerpiece flowers or the environment
surrounding the reception.
Cake Toppers
Cake toppers are optional although traditionally has been
used, however, it can be a great expression to bridal style. Look around there may be toppers that delight
you, make you laugh or even play misty for you. Some couples choose
collectibles that later serve as sentimental curios; others even commission
artists to render their likenesses in polymer. Get feedback from your pastry
chef, but remember, ultimately the decision is up to you.
Cake Stand
Your cake won’t look good if it’s standing flat on the
table, so cake stand can enhance the height of the cake making your wedding
cake more eye catching. Most bakeries offers a selection of cake stand,
however, virtually anything can be used as a cake stand. Such as vintage racks, bric-a-brac display shelves. Please be
reminded to check again with your bakers for the weight and diameter for the
wedding cake before the purchase.
Cake Table
Decorator or florist should go creative decorating the
cake table, such as placing some flower posy, pillar candles, rose petals, lace
garland with a message “love is sweet”. You can even place a picture frame of
both your parent cutting their wedding cakes. Just remember to separate your
cake table with the dessert, cupcake bar table. You definitely don’t want to
have people walking around candy bar picking up candies while both of you are
ready to cut the wedding cake. No surprise
if your wedding cake table is the main attention because guests love to see
couple cut the cakes.
Once you've decided on the design and flavor, you should
be sure everything is detailed in the contract along with the fee for the cake.
